The Mad Scientist’s Guide to World Domination edited by John Joseph Adams

I feel like there should be a disclaimer here. I do not like short stories. I am not a fan. I think it’s like running. Either you like long distance or short distance but you hardly ever like both. And that’s THAT and there is nothing else to it.

The Mad Scientist’s Guide to World Domination. Come on, the title alone sparks interests! A friend of mine read it and loved it. So, I borrowed it. I get home, I open it up and then I read, The Mad Scientist’s Guide to World Domination: Original Short Fiction for the Modern Evil Genius. Wait what? Short stories?! Nooooooo! But I trust my friend’s judgment and so, I figured that I would at least give it a try.

Two stories in, maybe three, I was ready to declare The Mad Scientist’s Guide to World Domination my favorite book of 2013. The insight into the Mad Scientist’s mind is golden. I never knew that “it’s harder than you think for a being of pure scientific evil to hold regular office hours.” I learned about the genesis of Schizotypal Creative Genius Personality Disorder (SCGPD), the official medical term of Mad Scientist. I was asked to ponder “are mad scientists born… or are they made?” Did you know that “Everybody Needs Help with Their Evil Monologue”? Its Rule number 1113.2. Although my personal favorite rule is Rule 6.022Na, “If It Sounds Too Good to Be True, It’s Crazy”. However, “Never Trust a Job Posting on Craigslist”, Rule 5917.N/18.3e is also a good one to know.

This book was bloody brilliant (said in an English accent, just because I feel it deserves it). However… Sadly it is not my favorite book of 2013.  Smack in the middle is a story that just does not belong. To be honest it probably took me well over a week to read it because it was so dull and boring. Short story my butt, it was more like a novella than a short story. Frankly, it had no point AND more importantly had nothing to do with Mad Scientists. Personally, I think someone has naked pictures of someone and THAT is how it made it into the collection. Or maybe someone just had an orbiting death ray. 😉
