The Martian by Andy Weir

18007564I never had any intention to ever read The Martian by Andy Weir, even when I was told the book was marvelous. What can I say? I am weird that way. However, the previews for the movie look awesome and, of course, I gotta read the book before I see the movie.

Six days ago, astronaut Mark Watney was living his dream as one of the first people to walk on Mars. Now, he might be the first person to die there. After a dust storm nearly kills him and forces his crew to evacuate the mission while thinking him dead, Mark finds himself stranded. Not only is he completely alone but he has no way to even signal NASA that he’s alive.

I laughed and cried so much while reading this on the metro that I am sure people thought I was crazy. Watney has an incredible sense of humor through all his trials and tribulations. I would never think that a book about being stranded on Mars would be so emotional. But at every breakthrough I found myself tearing up. I’m not sure I ever rooted so much for a character before. The book is evenly paced with every set back and breakthrough based on sold science. Well, I’m not scientist but it all sounded plausible. The book was so awesome, now I am hesitant to see the movie.
